An icon of peace and spirituality on the Tyrrhenian coast

Christ the Redeemer Statue

An imposing statue that watches over Maratea and its visitors

Celestial Experiences: The Christ the Redeemer of Maratea

A breathtaking view and a spiritual quest in the heart of Basilicata

The Christ the Redeemer of Maratea is a 22 m statue located on the mountain of S. Biagio which protects the entire gulf of Policastro with its grandeur and its large arms.

In size the statue is second only to the Corcovado Statue in Rio de Janeiro. The Christ was commissioned by Count Stefano Rivetti and built by the sculptor Bruno Innocenti who began work in 1963 and finished the statue in 1965.

The statue is made of a composite of reinforced concrete and flakes of Carrara marble. Christ has his back turned towards the sea and opens his arms as a sign of devotion towards the Basilica of S. Biagio.
